bronze geometric bird on a marble base

This spirited and perky little bird is inspired by geometric votive birds from sanctuaries, some of which were hung as pendants, maybe from trees, which would explain the little loop on the back. These originals date to ca 750-700BC. I took a photo of the original with his little friends when in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in April 2022 - they are in the lovely Bronze Room on the left before you go up to the Thera frescoes on the first floor.

about the Geometric Style
The Geometric Style in Greek art dates to ca 900-700 BCE.
The decoration is formulaic, with the repetition of stylised motifs such as the zigzag, the triangle, the meander, and other linear and wave motifs. In addition to these abstract elements, vase painters gradually introduced stylised animals, birds, and human forms.
The literary counterpart would be the repeated epithets and formulaic phrases in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

These superb bronze pieces are cast in Greece using the traditional lost wax method. As nothing is mass-produced, there will inevitably be slight variations in texture, patina, and colour. No two pieces are ever the same. If mounted, the base is of black marble.
Please note that there may be a variation of some millimetres in the dimensions of the base from time to time, and that accessories such as spears, tridents or javelins may vary in length or height! If you need precise dimensions and weight, email me!
