lyre brooch

The lyre is one of the most iconic instruments associated with ancient Greek culture.

According to Greek mythology, the young god Hermes stole a herd of sacred cows from his cousin, the god Apollo. From the entrails of one of the cows he made strings, and from the shell of a tortoise, he created the lyre. Apollo heard the lovely sound of the instrument and his anger at the theft was assuaged.
