ANIMUM EST ET VIDERE ET AUDIRE (Cicero)

 

Taken from the Tusculan Disputations, a set of 5 books which Cicero wrote ca 45BC. It was at this time that his daughter Tullia had died following childbirth. This tragic event led Cicero, now aged 61, to leave public life in Rome and to retire to Tusculum in the countryside, where he devoted his time to writing philosophical works.

Latin inscription: 'It is the soul which sees and hears.'
