Inspired by the fish plates which were first produced in Athens during the 5th BC.

Most of the examples have been found in the Greek colonies of South Italy, dating to the late 5th and early 4th centuries BC. Originals can be found in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the National Museum in Athens, and the British Museum.

The originals were decorated with various examples of seafood, including different species of Mediterranean fish, as well as other marine creatures such as squid, octopus, shellfish and dolphins.
