Lucernae were terracotta lamps that were filled with olive oil. This lucerna shows an image of winged Fortuna, goddess of luck and good fortune. She holds a cornucopia, symbol of abundance.
It has an earthenware glaze which is the same as that used in ancient Greece and Rome, so it can be used as a functioning lamp.
The lamp should be placed on a heatproof surface before lighting, and half filled with olive oil. The wick is placed in the larger of the two holes. (Oil or wick not supplied).
