relief panel of Pensive Athena

The original relief, now at the Akropolis Museum in Athens, dates to ca 490 BC.

The goddess, deep in thought, leans on her upturned spear and is dressed in a simple Doric peplos. She may be mourning the loss of Athenian lives during the bitter conflict with the Persians, especially at the Battle of Marathon, where almost two hundred Athenians died. The artist here conveys the gentler nature of the warrior goddess.
