geometric oil lamp - grazing birds

Lamps such as these, in varying sizes, were found in cemeteries such as the Kerameikos in Athens and date to the 7th century BC. The decoration is formulaic, as is typical of the geometric style: the repetition of motifs in the painting of the 7th century BC echoes the literary use of epithets and short repeated phrases in works such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
