CELEBRATING A CENTENARY OF LOEB CLASSICAL TEXTS

May 2011

'With the Persians to Marathon'

An evening at It's All Greek, in conjunction with David Stuttard, The Traveller and The Actors of Dionysos (aod):
a special event to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Marathon.

David Stuttard, aod writer and translator, will be accompanying a special tour for The Traveller, tracing the journey of Persian armies from Sardis in Turkey (where they first mustered to Athens in Greece, taking in many of the sites and cities that they passed on the way. These include resonant sites like Troy, Philippi, Thessaloniki, Vergina, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea and Athens - sites which remind us of other struggles, too, from the epic struggles of Homer to more modern campaigns like Gallipoli.  The ultimate destination is Marathon itself, arriving on 10 September, the date of the 2,500th anniversary of the battle.

David (below) gave some 60 or more guests a lively rendition of the significance of the Battle of Marathon. Shown with him on the left, Tamsin Shasha (aod). Our raffle this evening was drawn by Graham Kirby, co-director of 'The Iris Project'. Proceeds to aod.
